(a recent (1996) chinese movie called the king of masks has as its main character an old man who creates the most beautiful hand-painted paper masks. in the center of a street crowd he is able to change from one mask to another, again and again, faster than the eye can see until the whole crowd gasps each time his mask changes. he is so exceptional an artist that the greatest opera singer in china calls him master. this is that.
